In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez is set in the Dominican Republic during a time of revolution. The story focuses on the Mirabal family as each chapter is narrated by one of the four sisters, Patria, Dede, Minerva, and Maria Teresa. They all go through many struggles as they fight for freedom in their country. Despite the unusual narrative format, the story action takes place in roughly chronological order, though some years are skipped over in flash forward jumps.
